Wuhan Wind Gongs with Gong Mallet

The Wuhan Wind gong — sometimes called a feng or Chinese lion gong — is the bright, immediate cousin of the Chau. Flat, untuned and without a rolled rim, it speaks the instant it is struck: a fast metallic crash that swells into a shimmering, cymbal-like wash and fades quickly. Where a Chau blooms slowly and hangs in the air, a Wind gong arrives all at once. Each gong starts as a bronze casting and is hand-hammered out to its finished diameter in Wuhan, China. The polished face darkens and patinas with use, which most players consider part of the instrument's character. Choosing a size 8" to 12" — bright and cutting.
