With his right hand (raised), he performs the Abhaya Mudra , and the Varada Mudra with his left. Known as the mudra of fearlessness, the abhayamudrā gesture signifies reassurance and protection. The varadamudrā , on the other hand, is a gesture of charity and compassion. The combination of these two mudras is a common image in Buddhist art , commonly interpreted as Buddha granting the fearlessness required of one along the path of enlightenment.
