Ganga, the River Goddess is the only living goddess in the Hindu pantheon.Ganga is the sacred river and has been referred to in the various ancient texts of Hindus. It is believed that Ganga used to flow in the heaven and sanctify gods with her holy waters. Ganga is a Hindu goddess who forgives one's sins. The Goddess Ganga represents the river Ganges. Maa Ganga has been shown as lady draped in saree, wearing a crown ,sitting on Crocodile . She has four hands . She holds water lily in one hand , a pot filled of Ganga jal in another. People believe that bathing in holy Ganga River will ward off all their sins and bestow blessings on them. The water of Ganga is considered equally sacred, this Ganga jal is used in religious ceremonies. The dead bodies if criminated at the banks of Ganga and the immersion of the ashes of a dead in its water is considered auspicious. Those who die on the land of Ganga, directly go to the heaven and attains moksha. She is called Mandakini in the heaven, Ganges in the earth, Alakananda in the underworld and Bhagirathi in patal.
