Buttero orange is a saturated rust-orange dyed through smooth vegetable-tanned leather — not a pastel, not a tan pretending to be warm, an actual orange that is visible across a room. What keeps it from looking like a toy is the leather underneath. Buttero is firm and close-grained, it polishes where it is handled, and it deepens with age rather than fading. The orange goes rustier over a year and the spine picks up a shine, so the object gets more serious as it gets older, not less. It is the cover people buy for a sketchbook more often than for a diary, which makes sense: on a desk full of neutral things it is the one you reach for without looking.
