For strength and to insure a smooth edge, the 2" sides are hemmed and the corners sealed. The hot dip galvanization process creates a thick coat of zinc to "self-heal" these caps from minor scratches to prevent rust. Galvanized steel is also a popular material choice because there is no risk of staining to the surrounding wood from water run off.
