This mantel is natural and UNFINISHED . You can leave as-is or stain/finish on your own. Our Heritage Mantels are resawn, solid wood (Douglas Fir) and manufactured from one timber beam. These are NOT box beams. These fireplace mantels are real, solid wood. Because of the unique nature of wood, each mantel will vary slightly in terms of texture and appearance (visible knots, cracks, etc.) The color of your fireplace mantel will look different depending on the lighting. Often times the wood finish/stain will look lighter in natural light and darker in a room with minimal natural light and/or artificial light. Please keep this in mind when viewing images. Appearance may vary based on the uniqueness of each timber - we think this is what makes our mantels unique.
