Pink Sand Brocade Marigold

The marigold arrived in Japan from Portugal in the sixteenth century and was immediately subjected to six centuries of serious attention. The Pink Sand Brocade Marigold is a ceramic wall flower, 5.75 inches across, one screw, no water. Dense overlapping petals in pink sand — the color of early morning before the day has decided what it wants to be. Six centuries of Japanese attention produced the brocade form, which is a more layered, more serious, more committed marigold than anything Portugal sent. The result is considerably better. Portugal has not been notified.
