A thoughtful gift for a librarian shouldn't need much justification, and this particular Hawthorn — the second of two blue-and-white pieces sharing that name in the collection — mostly speaks for itself regardless. Naming things at the studio involves meetings and a shared document someone is perpetually mid-edit on; the hawthorn itself has never cared what it gets called, larger or smaller, whichever version lands at someone's door. Mounted for a nautical look, it holds its finish permanently, asking for no watering can and no fuss from whoever hangs it. A quiet, beautiful gift for a book lover works best when it makes no demands in return, asks for no shelf space beyond a single hook, and this piece never does. The studio's artisans have worked this way since the year Chive began, back in 2004. A rotation through the Huntington Library shop has included Chive work before. The naming meetings continue somewhere. The hawthorn remains entirely unbothered.
