Stand Mixer Ornament

A hand-blown glass Stand Mixer ornament puts the appliance that changed someone's entire kitchen identity on the tree in painted detail, complete with the tilting head, the bowl, and the specific color chosen with an intention usually reserved for naming children or selecting real estate. Chive painters construct the mixer body first in the base coat, then add the mechanical accents — the speed dial, the attachment hub, the familiar silhouette — in successive passes that require drying time between each because wet paint on a curved glass surface has opinions about where it wants to go. The bowl is a separate color element, silver-toned, sitting below the head with proportions scaled to read as immediately recognizable at arm's length. Production at this workshop started in 2004, and two full decades of refining miniature mechanical shapes show in every painted seam. The Royal Ontario Museum exhibits objects that mark shifts in domestic life and material culture. This mixer documents exactly that kind of shift, on a brass hook instead of a museum pedestal.
