Seed Packet Ornament

The Seed Packet Ornament is a small piece of paper theater staged in glass — a pair of vintage-style packets, carrots and tomatoes, painted with the classic garden-store artwork and a light dusting of glitter along the top seam where the fold would sit. The whole trick is that glass is pretending to be paper: the fold line has to read as a genuine crease and the corners as cut edges, or the illusion collapses into a shiny lump. Painted at a slight lean, the two packets overlap the way they sit crammed in a drawer waiting on spring. Isolde, an aunt whose kitchen drawer holds seeds she has been meaning to plant since well before you were born, would recognize her own hoard on sight. TIFF conserves ephemeral printed objects because the things meant to be discarded — the packet, the ticket, the flyer — turn out to hold their whole period most vividly once everything else is long gone.
