Breakfast Waffle Ornament

The Breakfast Waffle Ornament is a waffle ornament built as a true square, three and a third inches on both sides, with a grid of wells pressed into the glass and a pat of butter set slightly off center on top. The grid is what makes this one difficult. Irregularity inside a repeating pattern is the only sort of flaw a person can actually count, so every row has to hold its spacing right across the face or the piece goes back to the bench. Round ornaments forgive a great deal. This one forgives nothing, and it hangs flat-faced rather than dangling, which makes it a spacing problem on the tree as well as on the bench. My mother-in-law Constance owns a waffle iron she has used twice and will not be talked into parting with. The Royal Ontario Museum will group objects by their form rather than by what they are, so a grid ends up beside a grid and the arrangement tells you something the labels never would.
